Support for landowners and farmers
What support is available?
Support available through the project will principally be through one-to-one farm advice within the project areas, but we will also deliver a series of workshops and farm demonstrations for landowners & local communities in north Devon.
A key element of the project is supporting landowners into Countryside Stewardship schemes, ensuring landowners receive long term support for nature friendly farming. We can advise on options relevant to each holding and provide support with the application process. Countryside Stewardship will eventually be replaced with the new Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme, so by entering an agreement now, landowners will benefit from the new agricultural policy once it is fully rolled out in 2024.
Please contact us if you are within our project area (see map on the previous page) and considering entering a Stewardship agreement in 2022 or 2023. We also have funding through a separate capital grant scheme, although support available through this will be competitive.

Examples of interventions we would support
Through a targeted programme of integrated farm advice, capital works, community action and training, the project aims to diversify permanent pasture, reduce runoff, restore and create healthy woodlands and hedgerows, implement changes in practices to protect soils and reduce compaction and erosion. By working with natural processes, we will be taking important steps towards making these catchments more resilient to climate change and extreme weather events. The below table lists some examples of interventions we can support as part of the project.
Tree planting | Creation of species rich grassland |
Hedgerow planting | Herbal leys |
Sediment pond and traps | Agroforestry |
Watercourse fencing | Winter cover crops |
Wildlife ponds and scrapes | Culm grassland restoration |
Leaky dams | Soil aeration |
Wetland creation | Hedge management (laying & coppicing) |
Cross drains | Buffer strips |
Gateway resurfacing | Wilding & habitat creation |
Gateway relocation | Natural regeneration |
