Working for nature's recovery

The Devon we love is in trouble

Many wildlife species which once thrived in Devon have gone or are now rare. Abundance in nature – its ‘everywhere and all the time’ presence - has disappeared from our lives. The rate of this loss is accelerating, and its consequences are now affecting us in profound ways. Nature’s loss adversely impacts our economy, our food and water, our health and our state of mind. Biodiversity – the web of life which supports our existence – is beginning to unravel. But it doesn't have to be this way...

Graphic of future vision for UK environment if Government 30by30 pledge is achieved

If the Government commits to protecting, connecting and restoring 30% of land and sea for nature, this is what the future for people and wildlife could look like.

Bringing wildlife back across Devon’s landscapes, rivers and seas

Loss is not inevitable. Devon Wildlife Trust’s mission to bring wildlife back stems from a need for urgent change. Conservation – holding on to the fragmented wildlife and wild places that remain – is no longer good enough. It is time to put nature into recovery. We need to restore what has been lost and we need do this on a grand scale. This means being bold: restoring degraded landscapes and seas, recreating wildlife habitat, reintroducing key species that have become locally extinct and properly protecting what we still have.

Nature’s recovery in Devon is not something we can achieve alone. It needs the support of individuals, communities, businesses and schools.

The Wildlife Trusts are calling for at least 30% of our land and sea to be connected and protected for nature’s recovery by 2030. Making more space for nature to become abundant once again will give our struggling wildlife the chance to recover and also restore beautiful wild places - places that store carbon and help to tackle the climate crisis.

30% is the bare minimum that nature needs to start recovering but we are far short of this and need your help to turn things around...

We can do this together

By joining our mission for nature's recovery, you will make a real difference to wildlife and our natural world. Every pound donated will help us move closer to our vision for a Devon where wildlife is no longer confined to small, isolated pockets. Instead, a nature-rich network, extends its tendrils into every corner of our landscape and our seas. With your support, our cities and towns will be greener and our rivers cleaner. People everywhere will have the chance to experience nature in schools, gardens, parks and the wider countryside.  We won't get there this year or next but we must start now.  Everyone can support and help us to succeed.

Nature has given us so much, it's now our turn to give back.
