On Thursday 1 May 2025, every seat on Devon County Council will be up for election. This is a vital opportunity for communities across Devon to vote with nature in mind — and to demand that our elected councillors take environmental issues seriously. Please note, this election covers Devon County Council only and does not include Plymouth or Torbay, check if your area is included here.
This year, Devon Wildlife Trust is calling for urgent, meaningful action to reduce the widespread use of toxic pesticides — both on farmland and in our streets, parks and playgrounds.
Pesticides are poisoning our environment.
Over the last 35 years, the toxicity, frequency, and area of land treated with pesticides has increased. These toxic chemicals don’t just target pests — they harm countless other insects and plants, triggering a devastating cascade in wildlife populations. Without insects, we lose pollination. Without pollination, our crops fail and wild plants disappear. Food security, wildlife, and the health of our ecosystems are all at risk. Insects are nature’s warning system. Their disappearance is a red flag we can’t afford to ignore.
The damage doesn’t stop at insects
Even in small quantities, pesticides pollute our rivers, streams and soils. Carried by wind or runoff, they enter watercourses, killing wildlife and damaging fragile environments. In England, every single waterbody fails chemical pollution standards. Only 16% meet the benchmark for 'Good Ecological Status'.* These shocking figures show how urgently we need a bold, coordinated approach to pesticide use — starting with strong local leadership from councils.
Change is possible — and already happening
People across Devon are taking action. Towns are pledging to go pesticide-free. Farmers are exploring nature-friendly alternatives. Gardeners are ditching chemicals. Devon Wildlife Trust is proud to support this positive shift — but we need more momentum.
Reducing how often and how much we use, choosing less harmful products, and restoring wildlife-friendly habitats all make a difference. With collective action, we can bring back pollinators and give our rivers and landscapes a chance to recover.
