Discover the wonders of nature with wildlife gardening open day

Animal lovers and gardening enthusiasts can discover how to transform their garden into a wildlife haven at an upcoming Wildlife Gardening Open Day hosted by Devon Wildlife Trust and North Devon Hospice.

On Monday 24 July, visitors will be welcomed to the stunning hospice gardens for an insightful talk on the principles of wildlife gardening before enjoying a tour around the beautiful grounds with the hospice’s Head Gardener, Ian Smith. As well as observing the wide array of flora and fauna, guests will also have the chance to visit the hospice’s Terrace Café, which will be open for teas, coffees, homemade cakes, and delicious lunches made from ingredients that are locally sourced or grown on-site.

While this event is free to attend, donations are welcome, and any funds raised will be evenly split between Devon Wildlife Trust and North Devon Hospice to ensure both charities can continue their vital work.

Katie Wilkinson, Wilder Communities Team Leader at Devon Wildlife Trust said “We’re excited to collaborate with North Devon Hospice on this event to inspire people to take action for wildlife where they live. Our gardens are an important resource for wildlife to find food, water and homes and we hope that people will come away with fresh ideas and new perspectives on how to help our wonderful wildlife’’.

North Devon Hospice provides care for local people who are affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. As well as offering support at home, patients can also be admitted to their Bedded Unit when symptoms become more severe, for help with pain management and to make them feel as comfortable as possible when they need it most.

As well as offering a beautiful and relaxing space for patients and families, the hospice gardens are also home to a wide array of wildlife.

“From small insects and birds to foxes and deer, we are lucky enough to welcome a variety of species to our gardens,” said Ian Smith, Head Gardener at North Devon Hospice. “To have the opportunity to share our knowledge of how to attract these animals through wildlife gardening with others wanting to make their outdoor spaces special for nature is fantastic – please do come along!"

The Wildlife Gardening Open Day will take place on Monday 24 July at North Devon Hospice from 10am-2pm, with three two-hour sessions available to book.
