MondayAbout the event
Not only do harvest mice build nests in tussocks of grass, but they have also been known to nest in tree tubes and areas of new tree planting.
This citizen science survey event will take place in the meadow at Devon Wildlife Trust's Higher Kiln Quarry nature reserve in Buckfastleigh. It will be led by Sarah Butcher who runs the Devon Harvest Mouse Project for the Devon Mammal Group. Whether you have surveyed before or not, all are welcome. If this is new to you, you will learn about Harvest Mouse habitat and ecology as well as learning how to survey for them and how to report your findings.
You can read more about the Devon Harvest Mouse Project here https://devonharvestmouseproject.edublogs.org/
Places for this event are strictly limited due to parking being limited near the site. Higher Kiln Quarry is currently closed to the public due to the presence of Ash Dieback disease, but rest assured that we have your safety in mind and surveying in the meadow we will be well clear of any potentially dangerous trees.
The Saving Devon's Treescapes project began in 2020 and is led by Devon Wildlife Trust on behalf of the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum. It's a partnership project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as well as other funders. Read more about the project and find other ways to get involved here.
If you have any queries about or in advance of this event, please contact Lindsay Mahon, the Saving Devon's Treescapes Citizen Science Officer on lmahon@devonwildlifetrust.com.
